The Hanseatic Route in the Niederrhein region

five-day bike tour along the Rhine

Container

In the Middle Ages, Hanseatic merchants on the Niederrhein and in the Netherlands transported their goods across the Rhine, IJssel and North Sea in small sailing ships known as cogs. Through their trade, these seafaring merchants created an empire and prosperous cities along the rivers. The new cycle path along the Rhein follows in the footsteps of this golden age of the Hanseatic League.

Experience history comes alive on this 156-kilometer tour. In each of the three Hanseatic cities of Wesel, Kalkar and Emmerich am Rhein, there is a mural that is brought to life using augmented reality (AR) on your smartphone. Whether it is an artist scene in Kalkar, trade goods in Emmerich am Rhein, or typical elements of Wesel, all of them make an unmistakable reference to the Hanseatic League. The people in the murals tell you an entertaining story, and who knows, you’ll meet one of these characters up close in the city.

This trip takes you to the picturesque Hanseatic cities on the Niederrhein and lets you share their medieval history.
