...that is why it's so beautiful on the Rhine

three-day cross-border cycle tour on the Rhine Cycle Route

Container

The old Hanseatic town of Emmerich am Rhein takes you to one of the most beautiful promenades in the Niederrhein region. Beach chairs invite those seeking relaxation to take a break, and from the 82-meter-high Eltenberg hill in the resort town of Elten, you can enjoy a particularly beautiful view of the Rhine Valley. Breathe in the slightly salty Rhine air and marvel at the hustle and bustle of cargo and excursion ships on the Rhine during your day trips around Emmerich am Rhein and immerse yourself in the Niederrhein landscape.

Dutch nature reserve and culture in Kleve

One of our suggested tours takes you across the border to the Dutch nature reserve “De Düffel.” Listen to the clattering of the white stork, which has found its home here again, before you reach the swan city of Kleve. Explore the city's landmark, the Schwanenburg, or visit the Museum Kurhaus Kleve with works by Ewald Mataré and Joseph Beuys. A green sea of trees and meadows awaits you in the baroque gardens, taking you on a journey back in time to the 17th century. On the way back, enjoy the view of the Rhine and marvel at Germany's longest suspension bridge, the “Golden Gate” Bridge in Emmerich am Rhein.

The historic Hanseatic towns of Kalkar and Rees, the oldest town on the Niederrhein

Our second tour suggestion takes you to the small fishing village of Grieth. Treat your taste buds at the café Hanselädchen before continuing to the Hanseatic town of Kalkar. The historic market square with its Gothic town hall, stepped gable houses and old court linden tree is a distinctive feature of the Niederrhein region. Also worth seeing are St. Nicolai Church with its outstanding late Gothic interior and the historic town windmill, one of the tallest functioning windmills on the Niederrhein. Cross the Rhine to Rees, the oldest town on the Niederrhein.

To this day, most of the late medieval town fortifications with city walls, rondel, mill tower, and customs tower have been preserved. One of the most beautiful German Rhine promenades invites you to linger before returning to Emmerich am Rhein.
