Art meets history

three-day star bike tour on the Via Romana and the Rhine Cycle Route

Container

The artist Joseph Beuys was born and raised in the Niederrhein region. Anyone who gets on their bike and follows the Via Romana cycle route, the Rhine Cycle Route and the Beuys & Bike Route will get to know the artist and his homeland in a relaxing way and also discover some historic little towns along the way.

The route passes the Kurhaus Kleve, where Joseph Beuys' first studio can be visited, and Schloss Moyland in Bedburg-Hau, where a large part of the Beuys collection is on display. In addition to the Beuys stops, other places of interest are also worth a visit: for example, the route passes the tranquil town of Kalkar, which still bears witness to its medieval prosperity with its Gothic gabled houses, the large St. Nicholas Church with its famous carved altar and two mighty windmills.

Embark on a special journey through time on the historic Via Romana. In addition to the Niederrhein people, Roman legionaries lived between Xanten and Nijmegen at that time. Since then, Xanten and Nijmegen in the Netherlands have been connected by the Limesweg. Since July 2021, the Lower German Limes has even been on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Discover relics of the ancient Colonia Ulpia Traiana in the LVR Archaeological Park Xanten, Germany's largest archaeological open-air museum.

Enjoy the sweeping views along the Rhine Cycle Route and relax a little before your journey takes you to the RVR Nature Forum on Bislicher Insel, where you will learn some amazing things about the floodplain landscape of the Niederrhein.
